reflection week 4
What I found most interesting about this weeks class was when we were able to watch Killing Us Softly. Though I have watched this once before I think that watching it again was beneficial because its a reminder of how women are being hyper sexualized in media and advertisement. I’m writing my final paper on sexualization of women in the media and Jean Killbourne makes excellent points throughout her video that tie right into my paper. I think that to many times people don’t take the time to look at an ad and suggest that there is anything actually wrong with the picture. People are pretty immuned to the fact that women are these sexy symbols and they are looked at just for a pretty face and sexy body. Although Jean Killbourne talks primarily about how women are objectified I would agree that men are too. After watching the commercial for H&M with David Beckham it is clear that men are looked at to for their bodies and masculinity but not in the same way as women. I think that this is something that should be a concern for everyone and especially young girls, no one should grow up thinking that these women in magazines are the norm, because they’re not and it is almost impossible to live up to those standards.
This week in class I really enjoyed when we talked about how we use our cell phones I started to think how crazy cell phone are today verse how they used to be, when the best game to play was Snake. I didn’t have a cell phone until I was probably 14 years old, and at this time the phones were a little cooler than my moms Nokia that I used to be obsessed with and wanted it for myself! All the phones I owned before I bought an iphone were pretty basic and the only thing I could really use them for was to make calls and texts, which I still thought was awesome until my friends started to get Sidekicks and I wasn’t able to get one. The first smartphone I ever had was the iphone 4s which I bought 2 years ago. All my friends thought I was lame because I just couldn’t believe that I could use my email, have apps, take pictures, etc.
The cell phone went from being this tool one used to talk to one another for the most part when there were emergencies or business and now they are literally computers in your palm. I think that the technology of an iphone is amazing and now that I have one I don’t know what I would do without it.
What I have enjoyed learning about in this past week of class was about the different types of films and how they have come about. I thought that class was very entertaining on thursday when we were able to watch all those different clips of the short movies from when there was no sound at all. I found it particularly amusing that when these productions started to take place the people in the audience were scared of things like the moving train that was coming towards the screen, or even the man that was holding the gun and fired it. I also enjoyed the second part of class where we talked about the films as they were evolving and sound started to play a role. Going back to the beginning of class, what I enjoyed the most was the short film The Great Train Robbery, because even though there was no noise I was still able to understand everything that was going on. I thought that especially for that time that that movie turned out really good and I actually enjoyed watching it without noise.
What I have enjoyed learning about thus far in the class was doing the online assignment #2. What I enjoyed most about this was being able to listen to both songs (All going out nothing coming in and Alcoholic blues) and distinguish what is different between songs in that time ear and songs today. It was fun to be able to listen to those songs and hear how much different they are from what we listen to today. The artists that sang, sang with emotion and you can tell for example in Alcoholic blues that Billy Murray sounded very sad when he was singing. Then just from hearing his voice you are able to put together that the song has to do with a rough time and he is helping to portray that through his voice. Another thing I really enjoyed from this assignment was that it made me appreciate the piano so much more. I think that the piano is something that can be used in music and can portray so many different types of sounds, anywhere from; happy, sad, angry, excited etc. After hearing All going out nothing coming in I actually really enjoyed the song for the soul purpose of the piano and how happy it sounded in the song.
